Filing your taxes might seem like a hassle, but if you prefer mailing your IRS tax return instead of e-filing, you’re not alone. Mailing tax returns should be a last resort, when e-filing is not available. The IRS is known for losing/not processing paper returns, or entering incorrect information from the paper returns. If using a paid preparer, they are required to e-file in most instances and most returns filed on paper must include an additional statement as to why it’s not being e-filed. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of mailing your tax return correctly to avoid delays or penalties.

When Should You Mail Your Tax Return Instead of E-Filing?

While e-filing is faster and more convenient, there are valid reasons for mailing your return, including:

  • Certain Forms Can't Be E-Filed – Some IRS tax forms, like specific corporate and amended returns, must be mailed.
  • Amended Returns (Form 1040-X)If you need to correct a previously filed return, you must mail Form 1040-X.

Gather the Required Documents

Before mailing your tax return, make sure you have everything in order:

  • The Correct Tax Form:
    • Form 1120 (C-Corporations)
    • Form 1065 (Partnerships)
    • Form 1040 (Individuals)
    • Form 1120S (S-Corporations)
  • Necessary Attachments: Include W-2s, 1099s, supporting schedules, and any other required documents.
  • Payment for Any Taxes Owed: If you owe taxes, include a check or money order payable to the “U.S. Treasury” (do not staple to your return). Also be sure to write your EIN or SSN on the check (depending on whether a business or personal return is filed.

Find the Correct IRS Mailing Address and Postage

The IRS has multiple mailing addresses, which vary based on your form type and state. To ensure your return goes to the right place:

  • Check IRS Instructions: Find the correct address on the IRS website here.
  • Use a Large Envelope: A 9”x12” or larger envelope prevents thick tax forms from being folded, making processing easier.
  • Choose a Trackable Mailing Service: Use USPS Certified Mail, FedEx, or UPS with tracking and proof of delivery.

Bottom Line: What to Do After Mailing Your Tax Return

Once you’ve sent your return, don’t forget to:

  • Track Your Return: If you used Certified Mail, check the delivery status.
  • Check Your IRS Account: Once the return is processed, it will appear in your IRS account.
  • Wait for IRS Processing: It can take 4-6 weeks (or longer during peak tax season) to process mailed returns.
  • Contact the IRS if Necessary: If you don’t receive a refund within a reasonable time, call the IRS at 800-829-1040.

Other Alternatives

  • Faxing Your Return: Some forms allow fax submission instead of mailing. Check IRS instructions to see if this applies to you.
